BA, Philosophy and Labor Studies, ÐÓ°É´«Ã½
Katie graduated from the ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ in 2023 with a BA in Philosophy and a minor in Labor Studies. She has since returned to USM with her role at the Scontras Labor Center.
Katie has said her life experience led her to the labor movement. Growing up in Gray, Maine, as the child of working-class parents, she held jobs in food service and farm work, where she became acutely aware into the challenges faced by working people. After learning about labor history in a philosophy course here at USM, Katie was inspired to get involved in the labor movement.
Katie brings a diverse background in community organizing and advocacy. In 2021, she served as a Community Development Intern for the City of Bath, contributing to initiatives aimed at fostering community engagement and food security. From 2022 to 2023, Katie served as an intern with the Maine AFL-CIO, where she helped generate community support for union organizing efforts, facilitated training programs, and contributed to strengthening the labor movement in Maine. She continued work as an organizer with the Maine Restaurant Workers Coalition from 2023 to 2024, where she focused on empowering restaurant workers.
