The Dr. Charles A. Scontras Center for Labor and Community Education at the Ӱɴý provides educational opportunities to union members, students, and workers across Maine so they can participate fully in their workplaces, communities, and our democracy.
Dr. Charles A. Scontras, “Charlie” to his friends, was Maine’s foremost labor historian, educator, author, and tireless advocate for the state’s working people. Charlie taught at the University of Maine for thirty-six years with positions in the modern society, history, and political science departments and is the author of more than a dozen books on Maine’s labor history. Since Charlie passed away in 2021 his friends, family, colleagues, and students across the state have sought to continue his legacy. Our Center is named in his honor and is part of this legacy.
